The Chico chondrite almost escaped formal recognition and risked being discarded as terrestrial slag, because the first small sample submitted for analysis was just a piece of the rough caliche coating that concealed the inner meteorite. However, the whole mass was later transported to the Institute of Meteoritics and cut sections revealed a meteorite of great interest.
