The society has
two grades of membership:
1 Standard Membership
- Open to all at no charge
2 Fellowship Membership -
£10 per year (see below for details)
Current members now have the opportunity (should they wish) to
upgrade their normal membership to ‘Fellowship status’ this involves
a preferred voluntary payment of £10 per annum (though naturally
you may donate more should you wish.
Benefits include full voting rights, the use of the initials ‘FBIMS’
after your name (only fellows of the BIMS are allowed to do this),
posted copies of any journals etc and of course you would be helping
to get some funds going which will allow us to cover running costs
such as the website, postage costs and the costs of printing the
journal (as well as future promotional activities to encourage
more members, and to promote meteorite collecting in general).
Payment details are all on the form. If you have any questions
just e-mail the secretary. Full accounts will naturally be kept
and published, or will be available on request. Fellowship membership
with its associated payment are optional and you may of course
apply or continue as a basic member at no charge: however journals
etc will be emailed or available for download rather than posted
in future to basic members. The application form available to
download will hopefully explain it all: please read it and complete
all details, selecting the membership status of your choice. Also
on the form is the option to opt into to the ‘BIMS meteorite fall
response team’ as was recently discussed on the BIMS mailing list.
When the next UK fall happens it will be useful to have a basic
response plan in place. Since speed and co-operation will be of
the essence, it is proposed that local coordinators be appointed
and the person(s) nearest the fall take charge of contacting the
other members (and acting as ‘our person on the ground’ for that
locality: local knowledge is all important in these situations).
A note to international
members : it is not practical to extend the fall response network
beyond the UK and Ireland at present. Thank you all for your support.
