Pontlyfni Fell 11:53 14th April 1931

Postby David Entwistle » Sun Apr 13, 2014 10:23 am

Hi,

14th April 2014 will mark the eighty-third anniversary of the meteorite fall near the village of Pontllyfni, North Wales. Does anyone have anything Pontlyfni-related? Any pictures of the meteorite, or fragments?

Graham, how could you forget?

PONTLYFNI, THE INSIDE STORY: DISTRIBUTION OF METAL AND SULFIDE REVEALED BY MICRO-COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

We sat through the lecture together at the Meteoritical Society conference a couple of years ago :-)

OK, I don't remember any of it either......................

There doesn't seem to be much information available. Just about everything I know, other than the academic papers, is available on the UK and Ireland Meteorite page, Bryn Jones's History of Astronomy in Wales web page, or on the Nantlle Valley History web page. I have a photo somewhere that I think may be the empty and unused Coch y Bîg farmhouse, but that's on a hard drive on my desk...

I did call in to visit the local shop with the intention of buying a postcard, or other memorabilia, but it was closed down.

I believe the Pontlyfni meteorite to be the only witnessed fall of a Winonaite, but the early reports, and then the Catalogue, even got the spelling of it's official name wrong. It really deserves some attention. I propose a toast to the Pontlyfni Meteorite, happy eighty-third anniversary....
