Possible meteorite seen on a mantlepiece, in Redhill, near Reigate, Surrey, England in 1960s in a house owned by a man requiring nursing care. The rock was seen by a nurse, whose husband was a geologist. The nurse encouraged the man to report the find, but the man could not be persuaded. The rock was immensely heavy, dark grey in colour, round but uneven, it could be held in two cupped hands.
The man told the nurse that In the late 1940s or early 1950s, the rock crashed into his greenhouse when he and his friend were sitting in it, so probably this was during daylight hours. The man was Charlie... he would have been in his 50s or 60s at the time.
This is from a conversation with a retired nurse while we were traveling on a train this summer. The nurse will get back to me if she can look up the man's name.
