Moon dust found after 40 years

Postby bigade » Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:51 pm

Don't know if anyone else saw this in the papers today?

It's quite an interesting article. There are various other reports of it.
It also states that 'no one is allowed to sell any lunar dust they have been given, nor are they allowed to put it on show at their house.

There has been a lot of discussion about this on the met-list in recent days. It is accepted that the Apollo return samples are considered a national treasure and cannot be bought or sold, but the sample in question here comes from dust from inside a film canister collected on a piece of tape by somebody that processed the film. Pieces of this tape have been openly sold at auction and on the internet for the past decade (I see a piece with description at http://www.diamondappraised.com/apollo/apollo11dust.htm ), I've seen several sold previously. They do not appear to have been actively pursued until now.
