Cosmic Collections: Moon Rocks and Meteorites

    Attenborough Studio
    13 May 2016
    15:45 - 16:30

The Museum houses a world-class collection of meteorites - rocks from space that have travelled through our atmosphere and landed on Earth's surface. This collection is carefully conserved and actively studied by scientists globally, unravelling the mysteries of our 4.6 billion-year-old solar system.

The Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, is home to the samples returned from the Moon by the Apollo lunar exploration missions. Just over 380 kilogrammes of Moon rock is protected and scientifically processed in a specially designed, non-contaminating environment.

Come and meet the curators of both of these remarkable collections - Caroline Smith from the Natural History Museum and Ryan Zeigler from NASA's Johnson Space Center. Join them to discover what we've learned about the Moon and the solar system from these historic specimens.
