The following includes characters from the Cyrillic alphabet and may not display correctly if your machine doesn't have that appropriate fonts installed. Hopefully the meaning will still be clear.

Writing in a Russian language meteorite forum, CortesTM reports on the find of a couple of fragments from the 1998 fall Kunya-Urgench, or in Russian Куня-Ургенч. The fragments were found on the 14th December 2011 and have just been confirmed as being genuine. Full resolution images of the fragments are here and here. The location of the finds is the area of Dashkhowus Velayat, here in northern Turkmenistan (the M.B. coordinates used vary from the R.A.M. coordinates by 2' in longitude).

The Russian Academy of Meteorites entry for Куня-Ургенч is here.

The write up for Kunya-Urgench, from the meteoritical bulletin, is as follows:

Dashkhowus Velayat, Turkmenistan
Fell 1998 June 20, 17:25 local time
Ordinary chondrite (H5)

A large bolide was observed by people in several villages, and a loud whistling followed by a crashing noise was heard. A large mass impacted 30–50 m from several farmers in a cotton field, creating a 6 m wide, 4 m deep crater. A single stone weighing ~900 kg was recovered from the crater, and 1000–1100 kg was recovered in total. Mineralogy and classification (O. Odekov, Turk; S. Muhamednazarov, NHCT; A. Ivanov, Vernad): olivine, Fa18.0; pyroxene, Fs15.9. Specimens: type specimens, NHCT, Vernad; main mass, Turk. This meteorite is also known by the name Saparmurat Turkmenbashy.

Congratulations to all involved.
