With the field work came 26th meteorite expedition Ural Federal University, which included students and researchers of the Institute of Physics and Technology and Research Center UFU "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology".

This year's expedition lasted 19 days and was more than successful. Search and excavations were carried out in the mountains on the border of Yakutia and the Kolyma, where researchers and managed to find unique pieces of meteorite Seimchan. Its characteristic feature is that of the meteorite is not only stone, but also metal - in roughly equal proportions. Finding Ural researchers - a rarity because most all fallen to the ground meteorites composed of stone.

Members of the expedition brought 165 kg meteorite fragments. According to the head of the field unit, Mikhail Larionov, this material will last for a long time of research. "Having studied the structure of the meteorite, we can make some conclusions about the development of the universe," - said Larionov.

The expedition this year was held in the framework of the federal target program "Scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel of innovative Russia" for 2009-2013 and with the financial support of the administration of the Urals Federal University.

Last year, the expedition celebrated its 25th anniversary. For a quarter century seekers extracted samples of meteorites in the Far East, in the Volgograd region, the Trans-Baikal region and the Urals. History meteorite expedition UFU rich and victories and disappointments, however, scientists and university UB RAS can be proud with the results in the study of extraterrestrial materials.
