OT: Jaxa D-SEND Supersonic Trials

Postby David Entwistle » Mon May 23, 2011 11:45 pm

Hi,

This is strictly off-topic here, but interesting in relation to sonic effects from meteorite falls.

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have recently completed the first stage the D-SEND1 project which includes drop tests on projectiles designed to help devellop a hypersonic aircraft with a "low-boom" profile. The phase 1 test projectiles were droped from a balloon at 30 km and atained supersonic speeds under free fall. A network of sensors, some suspended from blimps at 1 km altitude and some on the ground, were used to record the sonic booms created. Phase 2 tests will be conducted on a scale model of the devellopment aircraft, incorporating the "low-boom" features. Testing was carried out at the Esrange Space Center in Sweden. Details here and here.
